This piece was created at Goldsmiths, University of London, in a course on Children’s Illustration. We were asked to illustrate poems written by our course lecturer, children’s book author Colin McNaughton. This poem about a literal ‘cat burglar’, I chose to do in black and white. I sketched it in pencil and then drew over it with black fine art pens. Once done, I imported it into Photoshop and added subtle shading in grey and one small element of color, shiny pink boots. The cat’s smug expression felt like a tiny triumph to me and I felt color would overwhelm the details.
